PROJECT #2

How to make a modern day Piñata.

Read all of the directions carefully before staring to work.
The following is a list of ingredients necessary to make your own Piñata:

Papier-mâché (newspapers)
Four cups of flour
Two Cups of lukewarm water
9" round balloons
Twine or Yarn
One or two packages of crepe paper
A four ounce bottle of ordinary white house glue
Some construction paper (optional)
A one inch or wider paintbrush
An empty container (used to mix the flour and water to make paste)
Scissors
A sharp knife
A felt-tipped pen
A small quarter-inch paintbrush
A large work area, like your dinner table
A small little hook.

Now that you have all of the above materials, the first step is to make the mold.

First start with a simple round design. Inflate a balloon to the desired size. Next prepare the papier-mâché by cutting old newspapers into two-inch wide strips. Mix the four cups of flour with two cups of lukewarm water (warm water helps both of the ingredients blend better) in a container and this is your paste.

Next with your largest brush cover the two-inch wide strips of newspapers with the flour-paste. Then apply one strip at a time to the inflated balloon making sure that each strip overlaps each other. Cover the balloon with two layers of papier-mâché. To add some extra strength to the Piñata cover the entire mold with a thick layer of paste to seal all seams and prevents any cracking when drying. Let the mold dry for a minimum of 24 hours where it would not be in direct contact with the sun or other forms of extreme heat (for they will cause the mold to prematurely crack). You should have anywhere from three to five layers of papier-mâché.

Now it's time for the good stuff, with your sharp knife carefully cut a square with three-inch sides leaving one side uncut, for as to make a trap door. Through the trap door you could fill it with candies, small toys, money, fruit, or any other objects that children will enjoy.

The final touches would be to add on the crepe paper to the mold to your own taste, maybe add orange paper and to make a basketball. If you are making a basketball, draw in the lines with your felt-tipped pen. After you've added all the details to your design and have let it dry, it's time to enjoy your Piñata. Insert the hook into Piñata in a place where you’re going to hang it from.  Due: A – el doce de diciembre  B – El once de Diciembre
